This month, we’re excited to share Mikel’s book club pick: Palaces for the People by Eric Klinenberg. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, perspective-shifting read, this is a great one to explore at your own pace. As always, we won’t be hosting formal meetings, but we welcome any thoughts or takeaways shared with us on social media or via email.

In Palaces for the People, Klinenberg introduces the idea of “social infrastructure,” the physical spaces that bring people together and shape how we connect with one another. These include places like libraries, parks, childcare centers, and community spaces. Rather than focusing only on shared beliefs or values, he argues that these shared environments are what truly help bridge divides and build stronger communities. Through research and real-world examples, the book shows how these spaces can have a meaningful impact on some of today’s biggest challenges. Access to welcoming, well-designed public spaces has been linked to lower crime rates, reduced isolation, and stronger community resilience. In neighborhoods where people have places to gather, relationships form more naturally, and a sense of trust begins to grow. Klinenberg draws on stories from cities and communities around the world, from Chicago to Queens to Bangladesh, to illustrate how investing in social infrastructure can create safer, more connected environments. These spaces may seem simple, but they play a powerful role in supporting public health, strengthening neighborhoods, and even shaping the health of our democracy.

At its core, the book is both practical and hopeful. It encourages communities to invest in the kinds of places that bring people together, not just as a benefit, but as a necessity. Strong social infrastructure helps create a foundation where individuals feel supported, connected, and empowered.

This message closely aligns with the work we strive to do every day. Building a stronger community goes beyond meeting immediate needs. It also means creating opportunities for connection, support, and long-term stability.

We hope you’ll join us this month as we explore how shared spaces can help build more resilient, connected communities.
