Hunters Can Help Stock Local Food Pantries Through Food from the Field
Hunting season is an important tradition in Wyoming. Through Food from the Field, it can also be a way to help put nutritious food on the tables of local families.
Food from the Field gives Wyoming hunters the opportunity to donate all or part of their harvested game to food pantries across the state, including the Council of Community Services Food Pantry.
The program is a partnership between Wyoming Hunger Initiative, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department, the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, and participating meat processors. Together, they make it easier for hunters to donate game and for local food pantries to receive a valuable source of protein.
How does Food from the Field work?
Hunters can bring donated game to a participating processor, where the meat is prepared for distribution through local organizations serving people experiencing food insecurity.
Hunters are encouraged to contribute toward the cost of processing if they are able.
Wyoming Hunger Initiative suggests a $45 contribution at participating processors, although the amount may vary by location. Wyoming Hunger Initiative covers the remaining processing costs.
Safety is also built into the program. All donated deer, elk, and moose undergo appropriate testing for chronic wasting disease before the meat enters the food bank system.

For hunters who have more game than they need, donating even a portion of a harvest is a simple way to share an important Wyoming resource with neighbors who can use it.
High-quality protein can be one of the more difficult and expensive foods for families and food pantries to access. Food from the Field helps keep that resource in Wyoming communities while giving hunters another way to make their harvest count.
