March Book Club Pick: Reinventing Food Banks and Pantries

This month, in honor of March being Nutrition Month, our book club is reading Reinventing Food Banks and Pantries: New Tools to End Hunger by Katie S. Martin. Feel free to read along with us at your own convenience and pace! We will not be hosting any book club meetings, but we would love to hear what people think via social media or email.

In the book, Martin challenges a long-standing belief in hunger relief: that distributing more food will solve hunger. If that were true, we would have ended the problem years ago. Instead, she invites readers to rethink how success is defined. Rather than measuring impact by pounds of food distributed, she encourages us to measure it by lives strengthened and stabilized.


She offers practical strategies that can be implemented right away. Small shifts, such as offering client choice, improving waiting areas, or welcoming guests with a designated greeter, can transform the pantry experience into one rooted in dignity and respect. These changes are simple, but they send a powerful message about agency and care.

The book also pushes the conversation further. Increasing access to healthy food, offering job training opportunities, connecting individuals to additional services, and advocating for living wages and stronger safety nets are all part of addressing the root causes of hunger. Relief is essential, but long-term stability is the real goal.


This approach reflects the direction we are actively working toward as a pantry. We are continually looking for ways to strengthen how we serve our community and to ensure that our work supports lasting change, not just immediate need.
