This month, our book club is reading Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt and Vin Vogel. Feel free to read along at your own pace. We won’t be hosting any formal discussions, but we always enjoy hearing your thoughts on social media or by email.

Maddi’s Fridge is a children’s book about friendship, hunger, and what it can feel like when a family does not have enough food at home. Through a simple and thoughtful story, the book offers a gentle way to talk with children about food insecurity, kindness, and how to respond when someone they care about is going through a hard time.

This month’s pick is a little different from our usual book club selections, but we think it is an important one. Children may notice when a classmate does not have lunch, talks about being hungry, or seems worried about food at home. Books like Maddi’s Fridge can help start conversations about empathy, privacy, and the fact that not every family has the same access to basic needs.

The story also connects closely with the work we do at Council of Community Services. Food insecurity affects people of all ages, including children and families in our own community. While a book cannot solve hunger, it can help children and adults better understand what their neighbors may be experiencing and why support matters.

We hope you’ll read along with us this month, especially with the children in your life. It may be a meaningful way to talk about hunger, friendship, and how small acts of care can make a difference.

Book clubs can make children’s stories more meaningful by giving readers a chance to discuss characters, choices, and the lessons behind the story. Maddi’s Fridge especially offers a thoughtful way to explore kindness, friendship, and food insecurity. I also think shared reading can build curiosity and empathy. Even an Amazon Automation Store relies on thoughtful choices and planning. What discussion question would you ask young readers after this book?

What a thoughtful pick this month. Maddi's Fridge handles a heavy topic in the most gentle, honest way possible and that is exactly what young readers need.

It also reminds you how much first impressions matter with children's books. Good book cover design for kids UK publishers invest in is often what gets a child to pick it up in the first place.
