This month, our book club is reading Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder. Feel free to read along at your own pace. We won’t be hosting any formal discussions, but we always enjoy hearing your thoughts on social media or by email.
Nomadland follows older Americans who, after facing job loss, financial hardship, or the loss of traditional housing, begin living on the road while working seasonal jobs across the country. Through personal stories and reporting, the book offers a closer look at housing insecurity, work, aging, and what survival can look like in modern America.
This month’s pick connects closely with the work we do every day. Many people are closer to housing instability than they may realize. A lost job, medical expense, rising rent, or unexpected crisis can quickly change someone’s circumstances. Nomadland reminds readers that homelessness and housing insecurity do not always look the way people expect.
The book also asks important questions about dignity, community, and what it means to support people who are doing everything they can and still struggling to get by. Those themes are central to the Council’s work, especially as we serve neighbors navigating homelessness, hunger, financial hardship, and difficult life transitions.
We hope you’ll join us this month and take time to reflect on the people and stories behind the broader issues of housing, stability, and survival.
